As part of the TOTO Architect Talk series of activities, the 2024 Architecture Competition “Rearangement” organized by TOTO Vietnam Co., Ltd. in collaboration with TOTO Gallery MA, sponsored by the Vietnam Association of Architects, was officially launched from August 30, 2024.
A fresh and challenging architectural theme
First initiated in 2017, up to now, TOTO Vietnam Co., Ltd. with the information sponsorship of the Vietnam Association of Architects has successfully organized 05 Architecture Competitions with diverse and attractive topics, attracting a large number of young architects to participate:
– 2017: Competition “Housing solutions for natural disaster areas”
– 2018: Competition “Soul of the City”
– 2019: Competition “Inspiring natural beauty in the heart of the city – Finding design solutions to awaken nature”
– 2022: Competition “Pavilion Design: Discovering New – Unleashing new qualities”
– 2023: Competition “Discovering informal spaces”
This year, the 2024 Architecture Competition returns with the theme “Rearrangement”, inspired by the design philosophy of Japanese architect Junya Ishigami. The competition will be an opportunity for young architects and architecture students to learn, compete, and express themselves with a challenging topic.

“Rearrangement” aims to rearrange existing entities to create new forms and combinations with new programs. Unlike “Recycle” which focuses on the life cycle of materials or “Repurpose/ adaptive reuse” which focuses on transplanting functions, “Rearrangement” aims to establish a cycle of displacement and exchange to create new combinations from natural or artificial entities that exist independently. A new spatial environment will be produced from there. Landscape can be created in architecture and architecture can be formed in landscape. It can be a forest replanted from other forests, a house rebuilt from other houses, a forest replanted from houses or a house built from forests.
This topic encourages young architects to observe and think about the architectural and landscape possibilities that can be formed from the permutation, reorganization, and rearrangement of existing entities in their cities. From there, the competition encourages students as well as creative practitioners, instead of focusing on creating new architectural entities, to observe and restructure or rearrange existing physical or non-physical forms; swap functions, adapt and customize to different contexts to produce architectural possibilities that reshape urban structures.
The competition officially takes place from August 30, 2024 and ends accepting online entries at 23:59 on October 8, 2024. The project models of the Top 10 best entries will be displayed at the exhibition of the TOTO Architect Talk 2024 event on November 9, 2024 and the final results will be announced within the framework of the program.

In addition to the prestigious sponsorship of the Vietnam Association of Architects – the first and official professional organization of the Architecture industry, the competition is also accompanied by experienced architects participating in the Jury: Architect. Hoang Thuc Hao (Vice President of the Vietnam Association of Architects, Founder of 1+1>2 International Construction Architecture Joint Stock Company), Architect. Nguyen Ha (Founder of ARB Architecture Office), Architect. Tran Canh (Founder of Adrei Studio Architecture Office).
Commenting on the theme of this year’s competition, Architect Hoang Thuc Hao shared: “Rearrangement is an interesting and topical topic in the context of modern architecture. This is a breath of fresh air, cleverly raising questions about the role of architects in restructuring the existing living environment. Instead of focusing on new construction, architects are encouraged to think about how to utilize and transform what already exists, creating new, more sustainable and adaptable values”. The orientation of the topic is also consistent with the personal perspective of Architect Hoang Thuc Hao because he believes: “Good architecture will contribute to creating a healthy social consciousness. Every community has the right to pursue modern architecture, bearing its own identity and enjoying a life with a high level of happiness – for each individual as well as the whole community”.
To compete with high scores, entries must not only demonstrate the criteria of inclusiveness, practicality, flexibility, and sustainability of design, but also highlight the boldness and creativity of the project in recreating, reusing, or redefining existing things (materials, forms, languages, etc.).
The attractive prize structure of the contest is also a motivation for the contestants to demonstrate their determination, including:
– 01 First Prize: 30,000,000 VND
– 01 Second Prize: 25,000,000 VND
– 01 Third Prize: 15,000,000 VND
– 01 Online Voting Prize: 5,000,000 VND
